The ultimate skiing area is increasing its lift capacity and its snow production
Tyrol’s Zillertal Arena continues to climb to new heights – and is
striking yet another new path! Last year “ArenaFUNt”, Zillertal’s
biggest skiing area’s yellow elephant mascot, introduced the
Arena Coaster, an adrenaline-inducing way of speeding down
into the valley. This year’s new attraction is literally going in the
opposite direction – namely a new second shuttle cable-car
which, from the start of the 2008/2009 winter season, will bring
winter sports enthusiasts from Zell up to the Arena. The first
newly constructed section ascends some 1.8 kilometres
covering an altitude difference of 734 metres, taking guests up
to the Wiesenalm and straight into one of Austria’s most
successful skiing areas of recent years.
“Our 8-seater cable-car allows us to transport our guests back
down into the valley even faster, even more comfortably and,
most importantly, without queueing delays. The extra snow
production on the downhill run enables our guests to ski down
towards the valley to the Wiesenalm. The new cable-car takes
them down the final section”, says Managing Director Dieter
Grepl.
Success often breeds success – with pleasing results: “The new
Wiesenalmbahn cable car means more comfort for our guests,”
explains Annemarie Kröll. Guests can now choose between two
different cable cars to take them up from the large Arena car
park to the Fun Arena, where this year further new features
await them. The cable car operating companies have invested a
total of some 19 million euros this winter, almost half of which
has gone into upgrading the already existing snowmaking
equipment making the skiing area even more independent of the
weather gods’ moods and schemes. An additional 25 hectares
of pistes can be covered with snow at the touch of a button, in
particular the pistes up to the middle station in Zell (Wiesenalm).
This increase in choice of pistes offers greater comfort and
safety to skiers and snowboarders.
Fun in the snow is high on the list of priorities this winter again in
the Arena-villages of Zell im Zillertal, Gerlos, Königsleiten, Wald
and Krimml. Wide, open pistes suitable for skiers of all abilities,
breathtaking views of the magnificent mountain region and many
particularly family-friendly facilities ensure that the needs of skienthusiasts,
both young and old, are well-catered for. Facilities
include, among others, a new children’s restaurant to be opened
in the Arena Center in the heart of the skiing area. And a new
ski trail now leads directly into the centre of Gerlos. Guests from
all over the world can not only enjoy 165 perfectly groomed
kilometres of pistes, they can also experience a new dimension
in tobogganing. The Arena Coaster, an Alpine roller coaster
opened in autumn of last year, proved to be a runaway success
in winter too. A 1.5 kilometre-long run taking you down to the
valley over bumps and jumps, round steep curves and two
loops, offers tobogganing fun whatever the snow conditions!
Many special features make the Family Arena so unbeatable –
be it the cosy, traditional mountain huts or the various childfriendly
facilities such as the ski disco, the children’s restaurants,
pistes suitable for the little ones and courses and activities
offered by the eight ski and snowboard schools – it’s all about
having fun in the snow.
Of course the older kids usually have a different interpretation of
fun. Therefore they’ll literally be jumping for joy at Gerlos’ Hot-
Zone Snowpark – freestylers of all ages can enjoy the thrill of
becoming airborne in this easy-to-medium difficulty Slopestyle
Funpark. Equipped with its own snow-making gear, the park
always has a good snow base and skilled shapers are employed
to keep it in top form. The Hot-Zone Snowpark in Gerlos is also
a suitable event location and is rapidly becoming THE meeting
point for the freestyle scene. A 700 metre long funpark and an
80 metre long halfpipe are also setting the freestyler scene in
motion in Hochkrimml/Gerlosplatte.
As is fitting for such an outstanding skiing area, the Zillertal
Arena can boast a few records. For example, its cable-cars and
lifts are capable of carrying the population of a medium-sized
town every hour – 78,495 people to be precise. And the longest
floodlit toboggan run in Zillertal can also be found in the Arena –
the Hainzberg run offers seven kilometres of pure action. You
can even enjoy a bit of star-gazing in the Arena – Europe’s
highest observatory in the Arena village of Könisleiten is well
worth a visit. And those in search of the Zillertal’s biggest
schnitzel, will probably find what they’re looking for in Rosi’s
Schnitzelalm in Zell.
With 165 kilometres of pistes, the Zillertal Arena is Zillertal’s
biggest skiing area. The Arena villages of Zell im Zillertal,
Gerlos, Königsleiten, Wald and Krimml provide skiers and
snowboarders with everything they need for a perfect day in the
snow. The free-of-charge ski bus ensures a quick transfer from
hotel to cable-car and 35 mountain huts and snow-bars provide
après-ski at its best.
