What began 10 years ago as a crazy idea with 3 participants and a
small but innovation-friendly crowd of spectators, has now become
one of the most fervently anticipated sporting highlights on the
Zillertal Arena’s social calendar. Stroh Juchhee! is the mysterious
battle cry for the craziest horn sledge race in the world. Over 8,000
ardent fans are expected to follow the race this upcoming season.
Speed is not of the essence in this wacky sledge competition. Instead
participants are judged on the most creative ideas and the most
spectacular way of riding their self-made vehicle, fitted with sledge
runners, down the slope. The increasingly sophisticated vehicles
usually take weeks to build, and the bar for the future winner has
been set high. After all, last year’s winner brought Gotham City to
Zillertal with the team’s black Batmobile creating a real Batman
atmosphere.
The next sledge contest will take place on 17th January 2010. The
jury, self-proclaimed “experts” from the audience, nominate the
winner. And the craziness of the competition reaches its climax at the
award ceremony, at the very latest, when the end of the event is
followed by an unbridled straw fight - with the straw stripped from the
winner’s podium: Stroh Juchhee! Or straw yippee!
