Summer in Tirol 2012 – Cycle and Bike Events

The Heart of the Alps is a sporting mecca, where international events take place throughout the year, particularly in the field of bike and cycling. Here are the top events for Summer 2012.
25 Dolomite Cycle Tour, Lienz, 12.06.2012
This classic race, which runs for 112 kms. through the Dolomites, will be taking place for the 25th time. The demanding marathon covers 187 kms in total and 3000 vertical metres. The route leads over the Kreuzberg Pass to Carinthia, then through the picturesque Lesach Valley to the Pustertal High Alpine Road and back to Lienz.

KitzAlp Bike, Kitzbühel Alps, 27.06-1.07.2012
The KitzAlpBike is Austria's largest mountain bike festival, offers five action packed days competitors and spectators. The 3rd Hill Climb in Brixen im Thale opens the event and truly lives up to its name! Then it is on to the Urban Bike Challenge in Westendorf, the Bike Fashion Show and the Trail Night in Kitzbühel, before the absolute highlight of the Mountain Bike Marathon in the Brixen Valley. Zillertal Bike Challenge, 06 – 08.07.2012
To be crowned King or Queen of the Mountain in the Zillertal Bike Challenge you have to complete this race without the use of the mountain railways. Over three days the race covers 196.5 kms and 10,210 vertical metres through the Ziller Valley – a major challenge even for professional racers. The Zillertal Bike Challenge also offers the category of Prince or Princess of the Mountain, for those who choose to use the Zillertal mountain railways to cover the steepest climbs. Even this option puts the majority of stage races in the shade as a sporting challenge and covers an ambitious 152.1 kms and 5656 vertical metres.

Ötztal Cycling Day, 22.07.2012
With a distance 13 kms, 1300 vertical metres and an average gradient of 11%, the route of the 5th Ötztal Cycling Day, which takes leisure cyclists from Sölden up to the Rettenbach Glacier, is a major challenge. But the breathtaking scenery of the Ötz Valley is also very much in the foreground of this fun cycling day for the general public. The road is closed to traffic for the whole day, offering the participants a safe and stress-free cycle adventure on Europe’s highest glacier road.

TransAlp Challenge, Imst and Ischgl, 14 – 21.07.2012
With 600 kms and 19,500 vertical meters spread over eight days, the TransAlp Challenge is a tough tour, but rich in emotional and sporting highlights. The tour leads through the most spectacular Alpine landscapes of Germany, Austria and Italy – unforgettable natural experiences are guaranteed. Ötztal Cycle Marathon, Sölden, 24.08 – 27.08.2012
After the start in Sölden follows the dreaded, steep climb up to Kühtai. The descent to Kematen is no respite, but the chance to make up time. The next climb into the Wipptal brings the riders up to the Brenner Pass and from there down to Sterzing in South Tirol. Then the marathon continues over the Jaufen Pass into the Passeier Valley and from there up to the Timmelsjoch at 2509 metres.

Nordkette Downhill 2012 – Austrian National Championship, 08.09.2012
The Nordkette Downhill takes place this year for the 6th time and has already positioned itself in rider circles as one of the favourite end-of-season races. More than 100 bikers face the hazards of the notorious track on the Nordkette high above Innsbruck and this year their courage will be tested to the limits once again – stunning impressions, fantastic pictures and great fun are guaranteed.
