Walter and the wall: "When I leave the motorway for the Zillertal Valley, I can see it already," the 48-year old inhabitant of Zillertal says. Since his youth it has always on his mind, and the Tyrolean is so attracted by it, that he has already climbed it several times. Once at the top, climbers are rewarded with a breath-taking view. Now, others will be able to reach the 240 meter high mountain wall at the Gerlosstein too because the first fixed-rope climbing route in the valley has been completed by Mr. Walter Hauser and his colleagues from the mountain rescue team. The Zillertal Arena, the biggest mountain adventure area extending from Zell im Zillertal via Gerlos to the Salzburger Land, expands its summer sport offers a notch with this new adventure. But: Spectacular paths do not only lead upwards – the new Alpine rollercoaster makes the downhill run speedy and exciting.

It's more than the willingness to help others that connects the men from the mountain rescue service. All of them are also enthusiastic alpinists. This is how the idea of a fixed-rope climbing route on the renowned route to the Gerlosstein wall between Zell and Gerlos was born. A word and a climb – they found powerful supporters in the the Zell Cable Car Company and the Zell-Gerlos Tourism Association. And now, enthusiastic athletes and climbers can enjoy the 400 meter long route on solid rock. A continuous steel cable provides the necessary grip. "If one handles the equipment in the right way, nothing can happen," explains Walter Hauser.
However, inexperienced guests will not be left on their own when they approach Zillertal's first fixed-rope climbing route, classified as medium difficult. "We make beginners become climbers," says Annemarie Kröll from the Zillertal Arena, the large activity and adventure area extending from Zell im Zillertal via Gerlos to Krimml in the Salzburg region and to Wald/Königsleiten. The local alpine sports schools provide beginners with valuable tips, and advise them with regard to equipment, which can also be bought or rented in local sports shops. The starting point of the new fixed-rope climbing route is easily accessible with the Gerlosstein cable car.

In and around Gerlos a special programme named, "Bergaktiv", makes truly "moving" offers. If you spend your holiday in one of the member hotels, you can take part in numerous guided hikes, bike and climbing tours, canoeing or fishing nature trail every day – all free of charge. The offer is valid from the 24th of June to the 23rd of September. Those who stay in another hotel can book the programme on a daily basis (30 Euros) or on a weekly basis (140 Euros). New this summer is an Action Package consisting of canoeing, a high ropes course and rafting. There are good reasons for so much action: according to various studies, the alpine climate, starting at 1000 meters, is very stimulating for the entire body and its regeneration.
The second Zillertal premier of this summer can do without hooks and mounts: Starting in September, the first Alpine rollercoaster in the Zillertal Valley will bring you down to the valley. The Arena Coaster, the latest in summer alpine sliding, offers families yet another regional attraction. Some of the highlights on the 1,500 meter long rollercoaster are the two full gyroscopes, jumps and its location close to the valley. The coaster adventure starts directly at the Kreuzjoch cable car valley station in Zell. The ascent takes place with a sleigh on its own tracks. You descend via waves, steep turns and a gyroscope until you reach the starting point.
"Not only children will be truly delighted", Arena marketing manager, Annemarie Kröll, predicts.
Where skiers and snowboarders experience one of Tyrol's most attractive skiing resorts in winter, a family-friendly trilogy of pleasure, adventure and recreation attracts guests in summer. The overall mountain adventure is to be conveyed in a relaxed way under the motto "Active Pleasure". The spectrum ranges from Kneipp tours to local cultural history, from family-friendly ravine hikes to rafting tours and to an excursion with a lama. Several adventure hiking paths can be explored on one's own initiative. Furthermore, the active pleasure comes at a reasonable price. Those staying in one of the member hotels can participate in many tours free of charge. Specialities like tandem flights for kids or an overnight stay in an alpine hut require a certain amount of money.
